User Account

Define AnyFileBackup users, their passwords, and what they are permitted to do.

AnyFileBackup User

User accounts control access to the AnyFileBackup GUI application only. This feature is available in the Server edition of AnyFileBackup. It does not affect the Task Processor when running as a Windows service — the service is governed by standard Windows service controls.
Username
The login name for this account. Usernames are case-insensitive (uppercase and lowercase letters are treated as identical).
Password
The password for this user account.
Confirm password
Retype the password to verify it was entered correctly.
Enabled
When enabled, the user can log in with this account's credentials. Disabled accounts are ignored — a disabled account has no effect on whether login is required.
Administrator
Administrators have all permissions and can manage other users' permissions, including changing another administrator's password or removing their administrator status.
Category
Controls where this user may log in from:
  • Local — the user can only access AnyFileBackup on the computer where it is installed; remote access is blocked.
  • Remote — the user can only access AnyFileBackup from a remote computer; local access is blocked.
  • Local and remote — the user can access AnyFileBackup from any computer.

Permissions

These permissions apply to non-administrator users. Administrators always have all permissions.

Activate / Deactivate tasks and Force start tasks
Permission to activate and deactivate tasks and to start tasks manually.
Edit task / group properties
Permission to change any task or task group settings.
Start / stop Task Processor (local)
Permission to start and stop the Task Processor application or service. Configuring the Task Processor is covered separately by the Edit configuration permission.
Edit account properties
Permission to change any account properties (FTP, LAN, Mail, etc.).

This permission does not allow managing other users' access permissions — only administrators can change user accounts.

Edit configuration
Permission to change AnyFileBackup Configuration settings. Does not extend to App Settings.

Login Behaviour

The following rules determine when AnyFileBackup prompts for a username and password at startup. Only enabled accounts are considered; disabled accounts have no effect.

  • At least one Local (or Local and remote) administrator account must always exist.
  • Any account with Remote or Local and remote access must have a password — passwordless remote access is not permitted.
  • If the only active local administrator has no password, AnyFileBackup opens without a login prompt on that computer.
  • If any active local administrator has a password set, a login prompt appears at every AnyFileBackup start.
  • If there are both administrator and regular user accounts, whether a prompt appears depends on whether the administrator account has a password (see above).
